FW: Call for papers: JLDHE Special Edition 2012 - Writing in STEM Disciplines

Call for papers: Journal of Learning Development in Higher Education (JLDHE) Special Edition 2012, Developing Writing in STEM Disciplines

Deadline for submission of papers: 30th April 2012

Publication: October 2012

This call is for academic papers or case studies relating to projects, development activities, research or innovative practice in developing skills for writing in scientific and technological disciplines. This is an area that is relatively underreported in the UK.

We welcome submissions from subject specialists, learning developers, writing developers, and others with a particular interest in this topic. The deadline for submissions is Monday 30th April 2012. Papers will be peer-reviewed; to help ensure a fair process, two versions of each contribution should be submitted, one of which must have author details removed and content anonymised for the reviewers. If you would like to have an informal discussion about submitting a paper for the special edition, you are welcome to call Trevor Day on 01985 844 822 or John Hilsdon on 07973 425931.

To see the current edition of the JLDHE go to http://www.aldinhe.ac.uk/ojs/. Please note, however, that for this special edition we will not use the online submission system but ask you to send contributions by email directly to john.hilsdon@plymouth.ac.uk. The guidelines for authors are attached.

Background

The National HE STEM Programme 2010-2012, an initiative funded by the Higher Education Funding Councils for England and Wales, supports Higher Education Institutions in exploring new approaches to recruiting students and supporting programmes of study within Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. Its primary focus is on Chemistry, Engineering, Mathematics and Physics – STEM subjects deemed strategically important and vulnerable.

The National HE STEM Programme, operating through six main HE partner institutions, which in turn engage with dozens more, has concentrated on three strands: 1. Widening participation within STEM disciplines at university level; 2. Higher Education curriculum development, focusing on course delivery & design and student support; and 3. Workforce development, encouraging those currently within the workforce and society without a prior university-level qualification to engage with further study.

One project within the HE STEM curriculum development strand, ‘Developing Writing in STEM Disciplines’ (http://go.bath.ac.uk/stemwriting), has focused on cultivating writing capabilities on STEM undergraduate programmes to meet both academic and employability needs. Recent surveys by the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), and other organisations with an interest in graduate employment, have identified some employer dissatisfaction with graduates’ writing abilities.

The project responded to such conclusions by carrying out its own research into engineering employers’ and engineering placement students’ perceptions of writing development. At the same time it gathered evidence and examples of strong writing development practice in STEM disciplines through establishing a network of regional, national and international partners. The project was led by the University of Bath collaborating with colleagues from several universities: Coventry, Exeter, Limerick, Oxford Brookes, Plymouth, and West of England.

The ‘Developing Writing in STEM Disciplines’ project culminated in a regional conference in September 2011, where an unusually eclectic mix of subject specialists, learning developers, writing developers, careers advisors, librarians and English language centre staff came together. This conference was a spur for two developments: the establishment of a special interest group on ‘Developing Writing in STEM Disciplines’ (in progress) and this call for papers for a special peer-reviewed edition of JLDHE on that theme.

FW: The changing face of Apprenticeships: an International perspective - Special Issue Call for Papers

Dear all

The past few years have given rise to tremendous changes in the provision and form of Apprenticeships in the UK, Europe and across the world.  The combination of Government initiatives, higher education engagement and employer enthusiasm has created an environment for Apprenticeships to again become a genuine alternative to formal higher education.

We are now seeking papers for a special issue of Higher Education, Skills and Work-based Learning (www.emeraldinsight.com/heswbl.htm) entitled ‘The changing face of Apprenticeships: an International perspective’.

We are particularly interested in:

·         International comparison;

·         Graduate apprenticeships (practice and theory);

·         The privileging of the voices of higher education provider, employer and apprentice within apprenticeship schemes.

A core feature of the Journal is its practice base and the editors would especially welcome domestic and international case studies

Papers will be accepted that examine the educational experiences of Apprenticeships from the perspective of skills, practice, employability, policy and implementation.  The Call is not restricted to the UK and the journal would especially welcome international contribution.

Submit a paper:

Submissions to Higher Education, Skills and Work-based Learning are made using ScholarOne Manuscripts, the online submission and peer review system. Registration and access is available at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/heswbl.

For full author guidelines go to http://www.emeraldinsight.com/products/journals/author_guidelines.htm?id=heswbl

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: MARCH 9TH 2012

For informal discussion please contact the editor Paul Gibbs on p.gibbs@mdx.ac.uk

I would be grateful if you could forward this call for papers to your peers, students or colleagues who may be interested in writing for the new journal. If you have any enquiries, please do not hesitate to contact me or the editor directly.

With best wishes,

FW: Call for Submissions for The Educational Forum

CALL FOR PAPERS:

The Educational Forum

The Educational Forum, Kappa Delta Pi's premier educational research journal, is seeking articles for its upcoming Fall 2012 themed issue on "New Literacies" and its relationship to teaching, learning and other major educational dimensions.  The Educational Forum is an international, peer-reviewed journal whose mission is to "publish compelling research findings and thought-provoking perspectives as a catalyst for stimulating and encouraging research and dialogue and for advancing and transforming education."

The Educational Forum is seeking original empirical research and conceptual essays that address the ways in which contemporary understandings of "New Literacies" are enacted in educational settings from pre-K to adult learning.  In the two decades since the term "new literacies"1i first appeared in an academic journal, reflecting a changing concept of how we think about teaching, learning and skills required for successful academic achievement, how much has changed and in what ways?  This themed issue looks broadly at how technologic and other contemporary developments in the most recent generation of educational history have (or have not) influenced the work, lives and thinking of teachers, students and others involved in education.  Papers that address the reciprocal relationship of "New Literacies" to classroom practices are of particular interest.

For full and specific instructions to authors, including page lengths and formats, please visit the journal's Instructions for Authors page, just click here.

The submission deadline is March 23, 2012.

FW: Sustainability Newsletter, September 2011

Call for Journal Editor

The International Journal of Environmental, Cultural, Economic and Social Sustainability seeks an editor, or team of editors, for a one-year term. This is an opportunity to make a significant contribution to what we believe is one of the leading journals in its field, the journal's associated conference and, more broadly, the knowledge-community which the journal and conference seek to serve.

The roles of the editor are to:

  • write an introduction for the Journal volume which would be included in the first issue for the year, and possibly on the website, the newsletter and other appropriate places or for the purposes of marketing and promotion.
  • collate papers addressing a theme of the editor's choosing into a book, to be launched at the conference at the completion of the editor's term. The chapters may be drawn from submissions to the journal during this or recent years, and other material as considered appropriate.
  • actively solicit manuscripts for the Journal from well-known and notable members of the community—these would could be refereed if the author wished, or regarded as 'invited papers'.
  • assist the Commissioning Editor with suggestions of supplementary peer reviewers for specific papers (and this will never be burdensome – note that the Commissioning Editor of the Journal finalizes a majority of the peer reviewer requirements based on thematic matching and 'mutual obligation' principles in which all author requested to review up to three other papers).
  • promote the journal throughout their network and other associated networks.
  • maintain regular communications with the community via periodical blog posts to the community website (which feeds automatically to our email newsletter, Facebook and Twitter).

The editor will be offered a complimentary electronic subscription to the Journal, free copies of the book which they edit, an electronic subscription to the book series as well as complimentary registrations to attend the conferences at the beginning and end of their term.

Qualifications

The Editor of the Journal must possess the following attributes:

  • They will have successfully obtained higher degree, and have academic teaching and scholarly research experience in an area related to the subject matter of the Journal.
  • They will have published in this or other comparable scholarly journals.

Applicants are asked to send:

1.     a cover letter outlining their interest and relevant experience, and the ways in which you would propose to enhance the profile of the journal

2.     a curriculum vitae

3.     a special theme outline: a title with paragraph explanation.

Please send applications and supporting documentation to journals@onsustainability.com.

The deadline for applications is 26 September 2011.

FW: Special issue of HERD

CALL FOR PAPERS
Special Issue of HERD - 31.5 (October 2012) The Development of Higher Education Research as a Field

Editors:
Dr Bruce Macfarlane, The University of Hong Kong Dr Barbara Grant, The University of Auckland

Higher education research emerged around the globe as an interdisciplinary academic field during the late 1960s and early 1970s. The field's intellectual and epistemic boundaries are fluid, inviting an exploration of the intellectual and professional/academic backgrounds and career histories of researchers in the field. To date, there has been relatively little empirical or conceptual analysis of the history of the development of higher education research. Two notable exceptions are Malcolm Tight's organizing framework that identifies the principal areas of academic research and associated patterns of activity and Tamsin Haggis' critical, historical analysis of articles published in three key journals. There is yet a need for more conceptual and empirical analysis that maps the broader social, cultural, political and historical forces that have shaped higher education studies.

In wanting this special issue of HERD to exemplify and analyse how the field of higher education research has developed, we are interested in conceptual and empirical analyses, critical reflections and case studies that add to what is already known about the topic. Articles for consideration should follow the normal guidelines for submission to Higher Education Research & Development.

Dates to Note:
Manuscript submission due: 30 November 2011 Anticipated Publication: late September 2012

Submitted papers should not have been previously published nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere. A guide for authors along with other relevant information can be found on journal's homepage: www.tandf.co.uk/journals/HERD<http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/HERD>

This will be followed in September 2011 by a thematic issue on Methods and Instruments for the Evaluation and Monitoring of VET Systems, edited by Philipp Grollmann & Melanie Hoppe.

Exceptionally there will be a third thematic issue this year, scheduled for December, on Study Abroad, Student Mobility and Educational Exchange in Comparative Education Research, edited by Bernhard T. Streitwieser of Northwestern University.

For early 2012 plans are in place for a thematic issue on African Higher Education: researching absences, equalities, and aspirations, edited by Louise Morley & Duna Sabri of the University of Sussex.

The journal’s Editor, Professor David Phillips, will be pleased to consider further proposals for future thematic issues, to be scheduled from September 2012 onwards. Please contact him at the University of Oxford (david.phillips@education.ox.ac.uk)

The journal always welcomes submissions for publication in one of its general issues (normally two a year, in June and December.) Full information about how to contribute to the journal can be found at http://www.wwwords.co.uk/rcie/howtocontribute.asp
